30 Days to Better Grades: Day 11 – Talk About It

Published On: January 1, 20150.9 min read

Humans are hardwired to communicate. The best teachers know that discussion is crucial to learning. Some children just need to draw out their thoughts before they can successfully complete a problem.

Use the power of language to reiterate lessons. Each night, ask your child about what he or she discussed in class. Ask clarifying questions and allow your child to interpret. A child who is able to receive information at school and then repeat it to someone else is more likely to understand the big ideas and retain information. If your child is supposed to write a story or report, let them talk about what they plan to write before handing them a pencil and piece of paper. Talking helps children gather their thoughts before they have to combine them with the added pressure of grammar and style.

Today’s Task

Ask for a recap of the day during supper. Make your child accountable for at least three new facts that he or she learned at school during the day.
